Winter Wonderland

I said to Blake: "Isn't the snow pretty? Don't you think it's pretty?" Blake replied: "No, it can't be pretty. It's not pink and purple."
Look at these fabulous action shots that I got of my two boys during our trip to Tahoe!
Okay, the funny thing is that both these pics were taken whiled the boys were sitting completely still. They're a bit. . . dramatic.

Michael is always very excited to go on trips (he calls them outings).  He gets so excited that he usually likes to pack his duffle bag and the car. I did not check his packed bag until we got up to the cabin. It was a bit surprising, but not really if you know Michael.

Things a 5 year old does not pack for a week at the snow:
  1. A long sleeve shirt (they were all short-sleeved)
  2. Pants (not a single pair)
Things a 5 year old does pack for a week at the snow:
  1. His soccer trophy from last summer
  2. 10 Dixie cups for getting drinks of water from the bathroom
The main challenge for us at Tahoe was actually finding a place to sled. You'd think it wouldn't be that difficult to locate a snowy slope in the Sierra Nevada after a storm, but you would be wrong. So after driving 30 miles away from our cabin on Donner, we found a good sledding hill from the bargain price of $5/car and $3/person.

Michael is a speed demon, so we start him from 1/2 way up the hill. When he wants to go from the top, I insist upon standing 1/2 way down the hill to stop him. So I stand in the middle of the hill, like an idiot, and he comes barreling down(reminiscent of Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation when he puts the breakfast cereal sealant on the bottom of his sled). As a mom, I am, of course, much more concerned with his welfare than my own so I lean down to try to "catch" the sled.

Allow me to pause for a moment to reflect on the fact that it might have been a good idea to take Physics in High School.

He comes plowing into me, completely knocking me off my feet, so and I grab him and kind of pull him off of his sled as I bounce down the hill for a bit on my stomach and hip. He looked at me red-faced with a huge grin, laughing hysterically and demanding a push down the remainder of the hill. Luckily Dave was back at the top of the hill and I could not hear him laughing.

I barely slept that night and couldn't walk up stairs too well for a few days.

So a few days and snow-caves later, we trekked back down to Santa Rosa where it was a balmy 62 degrees and Dave could mow the lawn. It was more "trip" than "vacation" but the kids didn't notice.

Shelby you crack me up. I have to say your post reminded of the time, just this last summer, when we went ice blocking down a HUGE hill.

I was thoughtful enough to demonstrate how it was done so the children could see before they actually went down.

Well, after falling off the ice block about halfway down the hill, the kids (and ALL the other families in attendance) got a nice little laugh as I bounced my way down the rest of the hill, before landing in a graceful heap at the bottom.

As if it wasn't bad enough, my escapade was captured on video for posterity's sake!

BTW, there is a tag, your husband's it up on my blog that I would LOVE IT, if you would do.

Is it bad to want to pack your soccer trophies on your outings? That made me laugh out loud! I love it! On a side note, little Ellie looks so much like a Jackson! She is adorable!

I feel sorry for your college roommate. The whole appendectomy is very scary when you are pregnant. I had it when I was 16 weeks. Are you going to the Danville reunion?

holy cow, shelby, that is funny! Did you pack any pants for him or did he have to wear the same crusty pair the whole time? That's cute to think about what he was planning for.
