Mr. Congeniality

Michael has started running track this spring and tomorrow he competes for the first time in the 100m, 200m, and the long jump.

He is very excited for his track meet with the other running clubs around Santa Rosa; they've been talking about it at practice for a few weeks.

Tonight at our uber-casual family council he shared the impending meet as his "big news item" of the week.

A few minutes later I told dad which events  Michael would be racing, and Michael looked up, confused.

Michael: "What do you mean I have to race other kids?"
Me: (thinking he was afraid of competition, I started back-peddling) "Well, it's not really a race, it's more like running your fastest next to the other kids. But that's what a meet is, it's the word they use for competition in track."
Michael: (suddenly looking very nervous) "I thought it was just where we get together and meet each other! You know, the track meet, where everyone who likes track goes to meet."

He didn't even know that there would be any sort of physical exertion at this event. And knowing Michael, he probably thought he would exchange a few phone numbers and plan some playdates.

Hi Dave and Shelby,

I found your blog thorugh a series of clicking through a bunch of other blogs (chalk it up to ADHD). I hope you are doing well. It's great to read about your kids growing up.
